T. Soomere visited the University of Costa Rica (Universidad de Costa Rica, UCR) and the Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica (La Academia de Ciencias de Costa Rica). The focus was on the possibilities of engagement of the young generation (starting from the high school level) into scientific research. The visit included discussions with the staff of the school of chemistry (Escuela de Quimica) of the UCR and the public lecture “Smart use of ocean currents for environmental management of maritime activities” (09.08).

T. Soomere visited the University of Central America (Nicaragua, Managua, Universidad Centroamericana, UCA) and the Academy of Sciences of Nicaragua (La Academia de Ciencias de Nicaragua, ACN). The visit involved several discussions with the leaders of the UCA and the ACN, interviews to the UCA newspaper, the web-based news service of the ACN, the daily newspaper La Prensa about the possibilities of the use of ocean currents for the environmental management of ship traffic and to the newspaper El Nuevo Diario about options for the use of ocean waves as a source of renewable energy, and the public lecture “Towards the use of ocean currents for environmental management of maritime activities” (UCA, 31.07).

The Wave Engineering Laboratory team organised a conference on modelling of hydrometeorological extremes in the framework of the ERA-NET RUS Plus network “The impact of EXtreme events of future climates on the marine ecOSYSTEM in the Baltic and Barents Sea” (EXOSYSTEM). The event took place in the premises of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. The team members presented the following papers:
